Mmmmm... new Animal Collective has been out for a bit now. I was pumped for this, I really didn't get into their last album. I felt that their albums Strawberry Jam and Feels were really where it's at. So I picked up my copy of Merriweather Post Pavillion, from my music guru.
Now I have fallen in LOVE with the new single "My Girls" with the rest of the world it seems! The beats are dancier and the lyrics actually make sense, kind of. The thing I noticed from listening to the whole album was that it's very accessible to a lot of people unlike a lot of their other music can be at times. The thing that felt like a punch in the face to me was when I saw a small album review in PEOPLE. Now I don't want to seem like a indie fuck, but yes any time I see a band that I love in a popular magazine or even in a commercial, it really ruins it for me. The album is good, I'll admit that. I already stated that it's accessible. Do I think that it's accessible to soccer moms who might read PEOPLE? HELL NO! My thought is that they might like "MY GIRLS", they just might listen to the whole album and like it although be really confused. Then if I'm lucky, they will listen to their older stuff and wonder to themselves, 'what the fuck.' Then and only then will they set the album aside or throw it away. If all goes well by the time they tour, if these people really want to see Animal Collective live, once they see them play they will hate them. They are not a band that is going to play their hits like most people do. When I saw them play last year, even as a fan I was a little thrown off. They are amazing live. Trust me, they are. But if you aren't on something when you see them play, you will wonder what the hell you just walked in on. I'm glad that they do have a wide range of fans. When we went their was everyone from punks, to hippies, to older people, and everyone in between. Listening to a band just because a magazine tells you too is pretty damn lame, in the first place. Even if you do listen to it, do it because you like it!!! I'm sure I'll go when they come to Minneapolis in May, but I swear if I'm packed in between soccer moms I'm starting a mosh pit!!
Well that's a rant for ya. Listen to the damn album, if you like it listen to the older albums. If and only if you like at least two of their other albums go see them.
